Collective Catalogue of 19th-Century Music Archives

This Collective Catalogue provides an inventory and description of the Musical Bibliographic Heritage held by the various different Latin American national libraries, as well as indicating the location of the archives.

It is derived from the project outline submitted to the ABINIA Assembly held in Guatemala in 2002.

The countries that have expressed an interest in participating in this initial phase of the programme are: Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, Spain, Mexico, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

Content:

It currently contains more than 15,000 works and approximately 25,000 copies, the majority of which come from the initial contribution made to the collective catalogue by the Biblioteca Nacional de España.

Archive typology:

Musical scores published or produced during the 19th century in either printed or manuscript form. Given music's form of dissemination, it is common that all that is conserved of many works are the papers drafted for its execution or copies submitted to the relevant authorities to protect the work's copyright.

Monographs on music. These include musical supplements inserted in monographs on other subjects or included in other general periodicals.

Facsimile editions, including musical scores that, naturally, constitute the main content of the catalogue.

Characteristics of the collection:

It includes all genres: theatrical (opera and light opera), religious, military, and instrumental music, and, in particular, ballroom music (waltzes, polkas, mazurcas, etc.), of which an abundant amount was produced in the period in question.
