The BNE gets closer to its users

Through the launch of its renovated institutional website, Spanish National Library, shows a commitment to new technologies and 2.0 services, opening itself up to the world even more. Forums, surveys, themed subscription channels and blogs seek to interact with users in order to find out their opinions and needs first hand.

The BNE participates in the World Digital Library

The National Library of Spain attended the official opening of the World Digital Library (WDL) in Paris. Promoted by UNESCO which hosted the event at its headquarters, this initiative shall incorporate various documents – manuscripts, engravings, maps, photographs, audiovisuals – into a new website which can be browsed in seven languages: English, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Russian.

Tribute to Benedetti at the Biblioteca Nacional

The poetry of Mario Benedetti echoed around the Spanish National Library on 28 April. Ven a ser Benedetti was intended as a tribute to the Uruguay author and his commitment to equality and human rights. It was held on the same day that the press disclosed his hospitalisation in Montevideo.

1,500 visitors during Open Doors Day

Open Doors Day

More than 1,500 visitors were counted on Saturday, 25 April in the traditional Open Doors Day that the National Library of Spain organises every year on the occasion of Book Day. The highlight of the day was a group of blind people, who visited the Sala Cervantes and other rooms with their guide dogs, and for whom a unique collection was displayed: a re-creation, based on relief plates, of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.

World Malaria Day

Two years ago the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared 25 April World Malaria Day, with the objective of raising awareness among the international community with regard to the devastating effects of a disease that causes between 200 and 300 million cases and between 1.5 and 2.7 million deaths every year, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
