Call for digitisation proposals

Call for proposals to digitise BNE holdings for research and cooperation projects

For some years now, the Biblioteca Nacional de España has been systematically digitising its holdings and making them accessible online through the Hispanic Digital Library and Digital Periodical and Newspaper Library websites.

During this time, the criteria for the digitisation of its collections – comprising more than 30 million pieces – have encompassed various aspects ranging from preservation criteria to considerations related to thematic interest, bibliographic and documentary value, interest for research, social relevance and public interest.

The value of digitised holdings as a tool for the advancement of research has been gaining increasingly more quantitative and qualitative importance, and many research groups have taken advantage of this digitised material to undertake projects in various academic fields. A growing number of academic groups and researchers have contacted the BNE with proposals to digitise its collections.

With a view to improving our response to these demands, and the quality and amount of our digitised collections, the BNE is calling on the academic groups and researchers who require the BNE to digitise holdings to send us their proposals.

Who is this call aimed at?

  • Students and academic research groups (national and international) that are currently conducting projects in any field which could benefit from the digitisation of BNE holdings, as an important driver for their research and the application of digital tools.
  • Institutions with lines of work similar to those of the BNE, which could promote academic research and the use of digital tools with the digitisation of new collections.

What are we offering?

  • Inclusion of the digitisation proposals in our planning. Digitisation will exclusively comply with the technical specifications of the BNE.
  • Uploading of the works on the Hispanic Digital Library website to enable their public consultation online.
  • Dissemination of the research projects and their results via the BNE's channels and media.

How can you participate?

(Call for proposals for 2018-2019 period is now closed).

To be able to participate in the call for proposals, you must complete the form and Excel template with your proposal of collections, and send it to the Head Office of the Digital Library Department (biblioteca.digital@bne.es) with the subject “convocatoria de propuestas de digitalización de la BNE” (call for proposals for BNE digitisation).

An evaluation committee (comprised of BNE staff and representatives from the scientific committee) will study the proposals in terms of their viability, scope and alignment with the strategic objectives of the BNE, among other criteria, and determine which of the proposals received will be accepted.

The collections which have already been digitised are available on the Hispanic Digital Library and Digital Periodical and Newspaper Library websites. The catalogue offers a feature to consult and search through all of the BNE holdings.

Composition of Evaluation Committee

An evaluation committee will study the proposals in terms of their viability, scope and alignment with the strategic objectives of the BNE, public interest, scientific interest or the exclusivity of the proposals, among other criteria, and determine which of the proposals received will be accepted.

The evaluation committee will be comprised of:

  • Representative(s) from the Digital Library Department (Laboratories-Digital Production)
  • Representative(s) from the BNE Department, depending on the proposed collection
